Many people are now becoming familiar with the terms laser, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and VPL (Variable Pulsed Light) – the latter being the newest and most sophisticated form of the science based technology that can be used to remove hair, thread veins, acne, pigment, wrinkles and various other skin conditions. The majority of the most advanced systems are actually manufactured in the UK due to the strong research and development departments that we have at our universities. One such manufacturing company, Energist, has recently launched a VPL ‘Ultra Plus’ system that now comes with additional hand-pieces that enable the operator to perform high energy medical treatments that out-perform any of the ‘beauty based systems’ on the market. This means that it is now possible to treat more severe conditions of acne and associated scarring, more stubborn hairs and thread veins. By doing this, it gives the clinical professional previously unavailable settings that can be tailor-made to suit any potential client. The UK is leading the way in the development of VPL and actually supplies the majority of it’s systems to the United States due to the exceptional levels achieved. It is therefore essential when booking a consultation that you ask your practitioner which supplier they use as there are a myriad of cheap imitation systems on the market that do not perform to the same level of accuracy or safety. If in doubt request to see a calibration certificate for the machine which will list the date of manufacture and most recent calibration checks, plus the origin of manufacture.
Dr Angie Winnington-Sharp at Cheshire Skin Clinic is proud to be one of the first clinical professionals in the UK to use this system.

Thread veins also known as spider veins or thread varicose veins are those thin blue “spidery” lines that show up seemingly out of nowhere on the face, nose, and most particularly the legs. Whether you refer to them as spider veins, thread veins, or thread varicose veins, they are all the same condition. Small blood vessels just below the skin’s surface become enlarged to the point that they become visible beneath the skin. Thread veins may appear blue, purple, or slightly reddish and may branch out like the limbs of a tree.

What Causes Thread Veins?

Thread veins can be caused by a number of factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes that come with menopause, and hereditary factors. Thread veins are related to varicose veins in that they can be caused by venous insufficiency much like varicose veins. Veins carry blood from the legs back to the heart. Veins have a single way valve that keeps the blood flowing in the right direction. As we humans we spend a fair amount of time standing and walking upright, blood trying to overcome the forces of gravity may flow back against the one-way valve and pool or collect in the veins. This back-flow is what causes the swelling and bulging of varicose veins. These swollen veins in turn can put pressure on the smaller capillaries nearer the skin’s surface and cause the appearance of thread veins. Thread veins can become apparent even without the obvious outward appearance of larger varicose veins.

Pregnancy can also cause thread veins, not only because of the hormonal changes brought on by pregnancy, but the additional weight and pressure that is put on the legs. So too can obesity lead to thread veins.

Thread veins are most common in the legs, but they do appear in other places. The next most common place for thread veins to make their unsightly appearance is unfortunately the face. When thread veins do appear on the face, they are most likely the result of a condition called Rosacea. It is a quite common condition among the UK population; Rosacea affects 1 in 10 women between the ages of 30-50. Those with fair skin and those who are prone to blushing easily are more likely to have Rosacea.

Treatments for Thread Veins

While thread veins are a rare cause for medical concern, from a cosmetic point of view they can be embarrassing. Thread veins can be prevalent on women as young as in their mid 20’s. Some of these women are under the impression that they can cover up thread veins by getting a deep tan while sunbathing. No they are absolutely wrong; Sun exposure can actually make thread veins more apparent. Laser treatment is a highly effective method of treating thread veins. Laser Treatments for Thread Veins – A newer technique for treating thread veins is the use of lasers such as pulsed lasers, also called Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT). EVLT is highly effective in treating thread varicose veins, but it is a relatively new procedure and not practiced in all parts of the UK.

Below methods may help you minimize the risk of developing Thread Veins

• Regular exercise of the legs

• Maintaining healthy weight

• Not standing or sitting in one position for extended periods of time

• Yoga

• Wearing support hose

• Keeping legs elevated when lying down

Thread veins or spider veins are very common and are actually just enlarged or overgrown blood vessels which normally affect the face, body or legs giving a red appearance. Thread veins may be inherited or may be caused by smoking or alcohol, temperature changes, hormonal changes, or by standing for long periods.

Laser treatments can be used to remove thread veins on the face, body and legs and will remove fine and large thread veins quickly and effectively over the course of a few treatments.

The laser delivers a burst of light energy to the affected area through the use of a special hand piece. This energy causes the blood vessel to clog and subsequently the clogged vessel is gradually absorbed by the body removing the vein.

The feeling of laser vein removal has been described as having a small rubber band pinged against the skin. Some people will be more sensitive to the pain and if necessary an anesthetic cream can be applied to numb the area and make the treatment more comfortable.

Treatment can last from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the size and location of the area being treated. The amount of sessions needed to remove the veins will depend on several factors including size, location and colour of the veins to be treated. Veins in the legs may require more sessions than facial veins.

Laser treatment for thread veins is safe and non-intrusive, however following treatment the area may be tender and there may be some redness, swelling or bruising which will normally fade within a week.

After treatment over exposure to sun should be avoided and sunscreen should always be used whenever outside to reduce to risk of the return of thread veins.
