Getting your body ready for the summer couldn’t be easier these days with the growing number of salons, spas and tanning shops that are now available to you.

Salons are popping up all over the country with tanning booths to offer you that all over sun glow for your bodies without the damaging UV rays of the sun.

This type of sunless tanning has grown in popularity since the 1960’s because of the links that were made by health authorities regarding exposure to the sun causing increased skin cancer statistics. People were opting to have a fake tan instead.

But what exactly is spray tanning and is it safe?

Well, basically, a tanning solution is sprayed onto your body to create a natural looking colour to your skin. This procedure is carried out by professional beauticians who are trained in this area or by stepping into a tanning booth where the machine does all the work. You just have to stand there!

The most common tanning solutions contain an active ingredient called dihydroxyacetone.
(DHA) causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids in the dead layer on your skin’s surface but it will gradually fade over the next 3 to 10 days.
Different forms of application will make a difference to how long it takes to carry out the procedure.

It is a fairly safe procedure but there are some risks which you should know about and then discuss with the person or salon where you are having your tan.

Some risks are:
• UV protection. The solutions do not contain sunscreen so it is still advised to apply sunscreen whilst exposing your skin to the sun afterwards.
• Asthma. Some of the fragrances in the chemicals can trigger asthma.
• Staining. It’s best to wait around 15 minutes before dressing after your fake tan to avoid staining clothes.
• Allergies. Always ask to have a skin allergy test before your spray tan incase you are allergic to any of the chemicals used.
• Inhalation. You should try and wear a nose plug to avoid breathing in the chemical smells.
