Welcome to ‘Skin Deep’ – This month’s feature looks at ‘Sun Damaged Skin and Sun Beds’. Any questions, just ask Dr. Angie Winnington-Sharp – www.cheshireskinclinic.com angie@cheshireskinclinic.com or 01925 263660 & 07967 481594. Next month we’ll be looking at ‘Top 10 Treatments for Summer’.

Most people are aware that sun beds and excessive sun exposure can cause long term damage to our skin. A tan itself is an indication that our skin has already been harmed in some way by UV rays and is actually trying to protect itself from further damage. Whilst having a ‘healthy glow’ can make many of us feel more attractive, going ‘over the top’ can have really destructive consequences in the long-term. Sun beds use for many young people may mean that a few decades after they initially used the devices they may suffer from premature wrinkles, aging, ‘leathery’ skin and even cancerous growths.
Some of the damaged skin can be treated successfully with laser resurfacing, collagen boosts, chemical peels and radio-frequency tightening and toning to give a non-surgical face lift. Back in the 1970’s there wasn’t the same degree of awareness that there is now so many people who were teenagers at the time have no option but to have some form of corrective, preferable non-invasive, procedure to ‘put right their wrongs’. However, in 2011 there really is no excuse. If you feel that you must use a sun bed then keep it to a bare minimum and anyone with pale/freckled skin should avoid them completely and apply a regular SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of around
25-30 whenever they are outside, even in the UK and even in April/May.

The warm weather is wonderful, but UV is a powerful wavelength that can do invisible damage initially – but it wont stay that way for ever, and after the age of 18, who wants to look older than they actually are?!

Acne Vulgaris is a common inflammatory condition, which occurs when the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum (oil). Hormones, diet and stress can stimulate the glands to ‘over-produce’ this oil, which can then clog hair follicles and pores and cause an infection. When these pores/follicles become blocked the environment is ideal for the bacteria associated with acne to thrive. This can cause redness in the surrounding skin, enlarged pustules, visible oils and in some cases scarring. It tends to affect the areas on the body that have the most sebaceous glands i.e. face, chest, back and upper arms/shoulders.
There are a variety of treatment options available including laser based VPLTM, chemical peels and home-use products. All of these offer a great alternative to steroid creams and other forms of medication that can carry undesirable side effects, especially for young adults.

A typical course of action is to have a number of laser based treatments to target deeper, more aggressive acne, followed by a course of home-use products and/or a chemical peel to target the remaining superficial areas of concern and any residual redness or raised and pitted scarring. The effects on a person’s confidence are all too often overlooked when dealing with acne and other dermatological conditions, and they can be devastating. Frequently the person involved is not aware that anything can be done at all and find it a huge relief to know that they do not need to suffer with the visual appearance and associated long-term worry that unsightly scars may be present for the rest of their lives.

If this affects you or anyone that you know seek advice today, and put your mind at ease. You can combat acne safely and effectively and enjoy a more confident outlook for 2011.

We all tend to get blackheads and whiteheads. They are non-inflammatory types of acne which are also known as microcomedones.

Whiteheads form underneath your skin surface due to a blocked pore which contains bacteria and sebum. Blackheads on the other hand are partially blocked pores which contains oxidises bacteria and sebum.

Naturally we try to squeeze them by our hand to get rid of them. But this could lead to infection and can also cause severe acne conditions. This can cause more damage to the facial skin.

The well known methods to remove blackheads are by using a blackhead extractor or a blackhead removal strip. If you are using the extractor you will have to gently press it around the skin of the blackhead, which will then be extracted. Remember to sterilise the extractor before using it on your skin to prevent bacteria being spread. Mature whiteheads also can be removed using these extractors. You just need to roll the loop over the whitehead. Black head removal strips are a type of adhesive tape. You have to apply it on the area of the blackheads and pull it out to remove the blackhead.

To remove whiteheads you do not necessarily need to use tools. When they get mature they are ready to explode. You can use a cloth soaked in warm water to gently wipe the area. This will assist you to remove the whitehead. At times this would not work but it would prepare the whitehead for easy extraction and you can gently squeeze it using a cotton pad.

However if you have a severe condition of blackheads or whiteheads it is advisable that you consult a dermatologist or a cosmetic physician.

There are two methods that they use to remove blackheads and whiteheads from your face. Namely it would be Chemical Peels and Microdermabrasion. Chemical Peels would help remove the upper layer of the skin which in return would assist the easy removal of blackheads and whiteheads. Microdermabrasion uses a treatment procedure which buffs and smoothes your facial skin through crystals. This treatment would remove unblock the clogged pores and would clear up your face Apart from the above methods to reduce and prevent your face from getting blackheads and whiteheads there are few skin care products that can be used daily. A cleanser containing Viatmin A or Alpha Hydroxy acid could be used on your face twice a day, which would encourage cell turnover. It can prevent oil or dead skin to clog in the pores. Once you have cleansed your face you should apply a non-alcohol-based toner using a cotton pad. It will help your skin to restore the pH balance.

You can also use Benzoyl Peroxide spot treatment on the blackheads or whiteheads. But make sure you use the appropriate percentage as it comes in different strengths to match different skin types. This will peel your pore making it easier to extract blackheads or whiteheads.

Applying a daily sunscreen can also reduce enlarging your facial pores. This will prevent you from getting microcomedones on your face.

Blackheads are one of the most common skin conditions that anyone would face. The moment we see it we have a tendency of squeezing the blackhead. But during this process you might damage your skin and probably infect it.

This can lead you to have a scar or it may turn in to a pimple. To assist you with removing them you may find numerous tools and products in store. Time to time you may see that there are different types of blackhead removers and extractors which are made available for you.

The best way to keep blackheads from not forming in your skin is to drink a lot of water, eat fresh fruits and vegetables and cleansing your face every day. Living in highly polluted areas which makes you sweat a lot or if you wear oil based make-ups can be another cause for blackheads. In this case you will have to cleanse your face when you get back from the outdoors. Make up should not be worn for a long period of time and should be removed using a makeup remover. This will help keep your skin clean and leave the pores unblocked.

One of the basic ways of removing blackheads on your own is to wash your face with a facial cleanser which consists of Benzoyl Peroxide, which will wash the dirt and dead skin cells. Massage the cleanser to your face using your fingers for few minutes. Rinse your face and pat dry it gently. Steam your face using a facial steamer or by rinsing your face with warm water. This will soften the blackheads for easy extraction. You should then use a sterilised blackhead extractor to remove it. Extract the blackhead using a mild pressure or you might leave a scar by damaging your skin. Once it is extracted apply an antibacterial ointment to keep the area free from infection. To prevent blackheads from recurring, cleanse your face regularly using face wash, toner and moisturiser.

You can also use a face mask which should be kept for 10 – 15 minutes before washing off with warm water. You also get pores strips, which comes as a sheet of paper with a mixture at the bottom, which helps to peel off blackheads. Some of these strips should be wetted to activate the mixture to make it stick on your skin. You will have to leave the strip for 10 minutes before peeling it off your skin. However these are temporary methods to remove blackheads.

You also get non surgical cosmetic treatments such as Microdermabrasion which buffs and smoothes your facial skin using crystals and a vacuuming device. Chemical peels can also help you to remove the blackheads as it peels off the top layer of the skin making it easy to remove the blackheads. In order to undergo non surgical cosmetic treatment you will have to consult a cosmetic physician or a dermatologist. Once you receive these treatments you should cleanse your face regularly to prevent getting blackheads.

Acne develops in your skin when you are an adolescent due to the change of hormone levels. Eventually this condition would fade away but would leave some stubborn scars behind which could totally put your self confidence down. If the acne scar is treated at the beginning it would be easy to diminish it. But at times we can be a little bit late for that simple treatment to correct it.

There are many acne scar removal products available and if you take the very simplest ones it would be the natural oils such as rose hip oil, lavender oil and aloevera juice or gel. These topical applications can reduce mild acne scarring. You can also purchase topical creams containing Vitamin E and other scar reducing creams and gels which you could purchase over the counter. The down side of using these oils and creams is that it can take a long time to diminish acne scars and you will have to continuously massage or rub the oils and creams on the scars.

If you have older scars it is better to consult a dermatologist to decide on which type of treatment is suitable for your skin. Nowadays you also get cosmetic physicians who can provide appropriate treatments for your acne scarring. Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, dermal fillers and Dermarollers can help you to revitalise your skin.

Microdermabrasion involves the removal of the surface layer of skin cells using a rotating vacuum machine which includes crystals. Before using the machine your cosmetic physician would apply a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the treated area. This is ideal for mild or moderate acen scarrings and would rejuvenate your skin. Chemical peels are more or less used to treat pigmentation and mild depression scars which is caused by acne and would need 2 – 3 repeated treatments.
You cosmetic physician would also inject dermal fillers to hydrate your skin and stimulate new collagen production.

Dermaroller too can stimulate new collagen production and improve the elastin in your skin. The process literally damages your skin layer strategically allowing it to self repair and develops a healthy skin layer. LASER and Intense Pulsed light treatments are also used by some cosmetic clinics to remove mild/ moderate acne scars and requires 5 – 6 repetitive sessions of treatment.

However in case of severe acne scarring surgical procedures would be followed known as Subcision or Incision. This is known to be one of the earliest methods of treating stubborn scars. Subcision involves a surgical release of the fibrous base of depression scars and excision involves in the removal of tissue of the scar.

Now you know there are so many methods to reduce acne scars, why wait try out the home remedies like applying creams oils. If it is too late for that pay a visit to your nearest dermatologist or cosmetic physician and get the right treatment for reducing acne scars.
Remember that your face is the mirror to your health and having a clear facial skin can give you self confidence to go about your day to day activities.

A common skin condition that almost all of us go through as adolescents is Acne. It can lower your self esteem by its blemishes, which can cause frustration especially when you are a very social person. Your facial appearance can make an impact on a person who meets you for the first time and having Acne and Acne related scars can make you embarrassed to socialise with new people. As adolescents we love to express our selves through our appearance and having an unpleasant face full of pimples and scars would not help that at all.
It can discomfort you more if the condition persists when you are an adult who has to build an image to market yourself for a job or promote your products and services.

What causes Acne?

The main reason for Acne development is when the pores in your skin get plugged with skin debris or dust it can trap the oil produced by the deeper oil glands of your skin which then causes inflammation. In return it creates black heads and white heads which gets infected and develops into severe acne conditions.

How can Acne impact your life?

It can have an impact on our appearance but it also has a major impact on the sufferer’s emotional and social behaviours. Acne can cause dissatisfaction with one’s appearance, embarrassment and lack of confidence and also create problems when they have to interact with the opposite gender, having to appear in public and associate with new acquaintances. The emotional stress caused by Acne is greater than the stress involved with chronic diseases namely; asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, Back pain, arthritis and heart disease. They may also undergo significant levels of depression and anxiety. Your quality of life can go down if you are suffering from Acne and Acne related scars.

Is there reliable treatment for Acne?

Acne being a widespread skin condition in adolescents as well as adults, there are more and more skin care products that promise to treat and control your Acne. However it is always better to seek advice from a professional medic such as a Dermatologist. Your dermatologist will assess your condition and prescribed the most effective medication or therapy to control your Acne from resurfacing.

Some of the Dermatologists are qualified to perform non surgical cosmetic treatment to reduce or control Acne using well reputed skin care products. It is important that when you consult a dermatologist/ cosmetic physician you do some research on their experiences and check whether their clinics are affiliated with a medical institution to ensure you are getting your Acne treatment from a professionally qualified and well experienced dermatologist/ cosmetic physician.

Do not get tricked by cheap skin care product that promises unrealistic results and comes as a DIY kit. Always seek advice from a well qualified dermatologist/ cosmetic physician. Even though the treatments to control Acne and Acne scarring would be slightly expensive at a professional skin care clinic you will be doing your skin a favour by letting it to treated the right way.

As adolescents we all go through a period of Acne conditions due to the high levels of hormone activity; however it can linger too much when you are an adult and can cause you much trouble. As much as it affects your social life it can also put you in emotional distress.
Today there are many products that promise rapid cure for Acne and some may not provide the projected results as in the advertisements.

The best way to cure your acne problem is through consulting a dermatologist who would assess your condition and prescribe effective treatment for Acne. According recent studies it is reported that 25% of adult men and 50% of adult women are affected by Acne at some time in their adult lives and one third of adults also have acne on their body.

With so many products readily available in the market in which some of them come as DIY kits it can be hard to decide as to which treatment is the best. Skin care products that are cheap can carry a risk of damaging your skin and worsening your acne condition. Let us see as to what we should consider before getting into an acne treatment regime:

Science: Ingredients that are used for the manufacturing of the product should be tested for safety and efficiency. Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicyclic acid; Tea Tree Oil and white willow extract are some ingredients that are used to manufacture these Acne treatment products.

Consumer Reviews: Nowadays most of us depend on consumer reviews before purchasing most of the products. So it is essential that you check for positive consumer feedback on the treatment method that you are going to choose.

Price: Price plays a major part when it comes to purchasing goods.
However you should not be taken by the cheap price range as this might have its draw backs. Always research on how effective the product is, than settling for a cheap rate.

Listed below are some treatments that can cure Acne.
Mild Acne can be treated by applying Panoxyl Gel which would prevent narrowing of sebaceous gland opening.
If you have mild or moderate acne you will be prescribed Erythromycin
+ Zineryt solution which is a topical antibiotic to reduce bacteria
growth on your skin.
Mild or moderate comedonal acne the application of Differin gel which acts as a Topical retinoid would reduce sebum.
Moderate or severe inflammatory acne your dermatologist would prescribe you Minocycline / Doxycyline capsules to be taken as an Oral antibiotic in order to reduce bacteria.
Moderate or severe acne commonly seen in women would be prescribed Dianette tablets as Oral anti-androgen to reduce sebum.
The condition of severe cystic acne can only be treated at a medical institution. Patient would be given Roaccutane capsules as Oral retinoid to reduce sebum.
All the above treatments would be prescribed by your dermatologist.
Therefore it is necessary that you consult your dermatologist or cosmetic physician before switching into a cheap skin care product.

Can we actually avoid acne problem? Is there anything we are able to do to avoid acne? I would say, that in many cases if we follow some rules we are able to prevent the problem, but in a number of cases we have no power over it.

If the dilemma is tiny, we often do not complain about it, but if acne is severe, it can do mess in our life. We don’t complain when single pimple appear on our face or chest, the problem is when whole part of the body is covered with acne and we still do not know if we did something wrong.

You won’t find in this article solutions for critical acne problem, because there isn’t a simple answer for that. You must to make an appointment with your doctor and be prepared that the issue will not disappear with a blink of an eye.

In this article I am going to speak about few main factors, which can be the main reason of your pimples problem. To avoid pimple formation, follow my guidelines and your trouble with time should become lesser.

Guidelines to Avoid Acne:

- Foods in your diet – pimples is not caused precisely by your menu, in some cases the food you eat can intensify the issue, that’s why it’s crucial that you watch what you consume. For people with oily skin type, a number of foods can intensify oil secretion by skin oil glands and its proper to avoid this kind of foods. Several foods to avoid: dairy products, fried food, spices, pizza, sugar, candies and chocolates.
- Eat fruits and veggies – they contain vitamins and minerals the body wants. You possibly will think of pills with vitamins, but it’s a lot better to look for vitamins in normal products. Consider to include some vegatables and fruits with each of your meals.
- Proper skin cleansing – acne is usually the problem of people with oily skin. When oil is clogged under your skin, then acne problem begins. Cleansing will remove acne bacteria count on the surface, that the oil will not be blocked without difficulty under the skin. Your infection will be weakened this way.

I understand how hard is to avoid certain foods, specially sweets, however it’s the decision you need to make. Start with tiny steps – and one day you will notice where you came this way, all begins with one step.

Just keep in mind that pimples are a problem and no-one wants it, but no one wants to be the prisoner of many rules. Look for balance in your diet plan and if you can, follow the guidelines, if you cannot – make an effort to adopt a number of them at least, still few is better than nothing, no?

There are various ideas on the subject of vitamins and acne skin problem. Some believe it helps fighting acne, while others see no help at all. Let’s take a look on vitamins, that I think may assist in acne care.

Many would recommend Vitamin A in fighting acne. Vitamin A can help in acne treatment however it’s on the list of vitamins which may do a lot of bad to your system as well. Balding, headaches and dryness of the skin – are some side effects of excessive use of Vitamin A. Choose other therapy solutions if you notice any of unwanted side effects in you from the time when you started taking Vitamin A. It may do more harm to follow the treatment but it’s suggested to stop immediately taking Vitamin A.

In my opinion it’s worth to mention about Zinc – a trace mineral. Zinc was and still is frequently used in pimples remedies and it is one worth trying. You have to test and see if it supports you and share with us how Zinc helped you in treating acne.

Vitamin B6 helps women in acne flare-ups linked to menstrual periods. Many females are pleased how Vitamin B6 served them during those days. 100 miligrams must be maximum limit of Vitamin B6 intake, however it’s suggested to take around 50 miligrams.

In treating acne, antibiotics sometimes can be the only answer. Antibiotics simply saying – reduce oil secretion in oil and sebaceous glands. All types of acne antiobitics are available by prescription and there’s no way around. Never overuse prescribed antibiotic to you. Antibiotics if taken wrongly may cause a number of troubles for you, so instead of getting rid of acne you might get new skincare problem.

If your problem is severe, please don’t try to deal with it by yourself but use expert help, that way you’ll get rid of pimples quicker and you will make sure that you do nothing wrong. If you are thinking of giving a chance to vitamins in pimples treatment, you need to decide in vitamins in pills or in natural products. It is better to consume vegatables and fruits that are rich in vitamins and remember that excess of Vitamin A can have its side effects. In fighting acne it’s suggested to use professional help. No matter if you choose to deal with acne skin problem by yourself or with the help of a doctor, I just want to wish you good luck.
