Reflexology is an alternative medicine method using the practice of massage to apply light pressure to parts of the feet and toes, to promote a positive effect on other parts of the body, or to improve general health.  Reflexology is based on the principle that every organ and system of the body has a corresponding point or zone in the feet.

Before having reflexology, your medical history will be taken by the practitioner and any known medical conditions should be stated.  Any footwear will need to be removed but apart from that the client will remain fully clothed.

Gentle pressure is applied to each pressure point on the foot and, where there are physical problems in the corresponding part of the body, the client may experience some slight discomfort and/or the therapist may feel some blockages in the area.  In general, reflexology is found to be an extremely relaxing and calming treatment.  Sessions normally last about an hour.

Reflexology can be used to treat a wide range of disorders including eczema, bronchitis, insomnia, migraine, PMS and menopausal problems, chronic fatigue, stress, depression and anxiety.  It can also be used to maintain a feeling of well-being.

Reflexology should be avoided during the first three months of pregnancy.  It can also interfere with any medication being taken and as such this should be discussed with the practitioner before treatment is started.  It is also important to tell the practitioner if you have kidney stones, gallstones, high blood pressure, thyroid disease or diabetes or if you have a pacemaker fitted.  Also, if you have an injury in the foot or leg area, the practitioner should be made aware of this.

Reflexology is suitable for everyone, and should instill a sense of relaxation and well-being as well as addressing any underlying physical problem.
