For those of us who cannot stop biting their nails, or who just find it impossible to grow them to a desired length, false nails are still the best way to achieve great looking hands. Individuals undertaking beauty courses may be interested to hear about this season’s must-have nail look.

According to Daily Telegraph writer Kate Shapland, the latest “backstage secret” is the “party nail”.

She recommended recreating the “crystal cave”-themed nails that featured in the recent Alexander McQueen autumn/winter 2011 show.

To achieve the look, professionals need to use a dark-coloured base and then apply “random” brushstrokes in a metallic shade to give the effect they have been dipped.

Ms Shapland described the nail art as “stylish and edgy”, as well as urging ladies to shape their talons so they are of a medium length and oval in shape.

Compared with some other styles, it was suggested this manicure “makes a statement for the right reasons”.

Elaborate nails are a key trend this season, with women opting for dramatic colours, prints and embellishments, such as placing real snakeskin on nails as recently reported by Good Morning America.

Make-up artists who are looking for new ways to make a client stand out may want to try painting their nails in a hot-pink shade.

Amy Lawrenson, a beauty writer for Elle, said: “The punchy shade seems to be the colour du jour for pedicures right now.”

She said that this shade is good for clients as it offers more of a fresh look than traditional reds and corals do. In addition, clients may want to try it as it allows them to try the trend for brights without changing their wardrobe.

 Ms Lawrenson said that she was a fan of Essie Punchy Pink, a shade that is unfortunately no longer available. However, the beauty expert suggested that make-up artists try Barry M in Neon Pink or Nail Girls in Pink number 20 on clients.

Another trend to follow may be that of Aztac nails, which were recently sported by Whitney Port. The star was spotted at an event in Los Angeles wearing white nails that had a black pattern airbrushed onto them.
