A new beauty salon aims to boost its appeal by selling handmade dresses on site.

Two beauty training graduates have been hired to help bring a salon with a difference to Hartlepool.

The Peterlee Mail reports how 26-year-old designer Vikki Ryan has launched the new Vikki Ryan Salon and Boutique, which aims to provide women with everything they need to look good all in one place.

Ladies will not only be able to have their hair, nails and fake tan taken care of at the venue, but can also browse handmade, one-of-a-kind clothing made by the proprietor. “There’s nothing like it in town, nothing with everything under one roof.

“I’m really lucky to be able to set up this business despite the current unemployment situation,” Ms Ryan stated. Joining her in the new venture is hairdresser Katrena Parkinson and beautician Chani Nicholson.

The news comes after Bourne Local recently reported that Alison and Mario Russo are looking to higher nine new members of staff ahead of the unveiling of their new high-end beauty therapy centre.

It has been claimed women can fight the signs of ageing if they begin a skincare regime from a young age.

Individuals undertaking courses in beauty therapy may find one expert’s tips on how to prevent the signs of ageing helpful.

Founder of the Natural Skincare Company Amanda McGillivray explained how a thorough daily skincare routine is vital to keep the face looking fresh.

She described how cleansers, toners and moisturisers should be used twice a day from an early age.

As ladies get older, it was suggested they need to use creams that contain vitamins A, C and E “to help fight free radicals and keep those unwelcome wrinkles at bay”.

Another tip was to avoid damage from UV-rays by applying sunscreen and “never ever” lying with the face directly in the sun, as pigment changes can be “very ageing”.

Makeup artist for Dior Jamie Coombes recently commented in an interview with the Daily Record how liquid-style natural foundation is the best option for those who want young-looking skin.

Individuals undertaking beauty courses may be interested to hear about this season’s must-have nail look.

According to Daily Telegraph writer Kate Shapland, the latest “backstage secret” is the “party nail”.

She recommended recreating the “crystal cave”-themed nails that featured in the recent Alexander McQueen autumn/winter 2011 show.

To achieve the look, professionals need to use a dark-coloured base and then apply “random” brushstrokes in a metallic shade to give the effect they have been dipped.

Ms Shapland described the nail art as “stylish and edgy”, as well as urging ladies to shape their talons so they are of a medium length and oval in shape.

Compared with some other styles, it was suggested this manicure “makes a statement for the right reasons”.

Elaborate nails are a key trend this season, with women opting for dramatic colours, prints and embellishments, such as placing real snakeskin on nails as recently reported by Good Morning America.

Undertaking beauty courses has been described as the best way to ensure a career in the industry.

Julie Speed, general manager of BABTAC the British Association for beauty therapy and Cosmetology and of CIBTAC the Confederation of International Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology, explained that employers are looking for people who have been specially trained and have a wide range of skills.

“Competition for spa jobs is fierce as they aspire to employ only the best therapists – be prepared for several interview stages and practical assessments,” she stated.

It was noted individuals who have retail and customer care experience as well as beauty training are most likely to be successful.

Ms Speed also commented that there are plenty of opportunities in the spa industry overseas, for those who are willing to travel.

Her advice follows recent remarks by author of How to Get the Best Beauty Therapy Jobs Nicole Pipe, who stated that careers in the industry are ideal for those who want to fit their work around their other commitments.

New research may interest those undertaking makeup artistry courses, as it has been found that wearing cosmetics can increase perceptions of competence and trust.

Proctor & Gamble funded a study carried out by researchers from Harvard and Boston Universities that asked participants to look at images of women with varying degrees of makeup and rate them on four factors.

The results found that respondents gave higher marks on attractiveness, likeability, trust and competence to the ladies who did not have bare faces.

However, those wearing a lot of products were considered less trustworthy and so it seems getting the right balance between natural and glamorous is important.

The researchers commented that the findings may suggest that cosmetics and appearance may have a bearing on whether women are approached for jobs and on dating sites.

As a result of the findings, ladies may want to take Guardian writer Sali Hughes’ recent advice and invest in good-quality makeup brushes so they can apply their cosmetics easily.

Individuals attending beauty courses may be interested to hear that this season’s key makeup trends are all about strong colours and bold styles.

Kakuyasu Uchiide, international artistic director at Shu Uemura, told the Belfast Telegraph how recent catwalk shows have focused on “unique takes on classic looks”.
For the autumn/winter period, he noted that deep berry shades and bold winged eyes are the top trends.

Vampish colours worn on the lips, alongside a flawless complexion, is one of the key looks for winter, it was suggested.

Mr Uchiide advised: “When focusing on a strong statement feature, the rest of the make-up should be kept toned down and fairly natural.

He explained how this will help prevent individuals being distracted from the “main focal point”.

Elle magazine recently noted that Dolce & Gabbana, Emporio Armani and Phillip Lim, Michael Kors and Marc by Marc Jacobs have all featured dark lips on their catwalks.

Individuals hoping to learn makeup skills may be interested in one expert’s suggestions on how to follow beauty trends at any age.

Estee Lauder makeup stylist Rick DiCecca described in an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review how many women “develop a sense of personal style” as they age.

However, he claimed that more mature ladies should not be afraid of trying out the latest fashions.

It was suggested that makeup can help make a woman “feel good” and this should not be overlooked.

“If you like the way you look, you feel confident and there is nothing sexier than confidence,” Mr DiCecca commented.
When sampling new trends, ladies were advised to focus on one feature at a time, such as bold lips or bright eyes.

Zara Rabinowicz, beauty editor at KissandMakeup.tv, recently described how lipstick is the easiest way to transform a day look into evening glamour as it will brighten the face.
