As the marketing coordinator at London College of Beauty Therapy I was happy to sign up to sample and review a range of different treatments to try and explain just how good it can be to experiment! While treatments like manicures will always be popular we also feel it is important to show case some of the other treatments our students are training in.

This first instalment is devoted to Thermo Stone Therapy Massage

The History of Thermo Stone Therapy Massage:

Using stones to massage dates back as far as 1500 BC when in ancient China and Egypt as hot stones were used in healing and worship.
However Hot Stone Massage as we know it today was first introduced in America by Mary Nelson in the 1990’s. The stones used are basalt and marble which are said to have healing and energy properties. The heat from the stones is designed to penetrate deeper into the muscles without the need for the same amount of pressure as a usual full body massage. In fact it is said that one stroke from a hot stone is the equivalent of 10 from the hand!

My Treatment:

Before experiencing the treatment my initial thoughts were that the treatment might be a bit boring! My only prior knowledge of the treatment was those beautiful photographs you see of models with stones placed delicately down their spine (a bit like the image at the top of this page!) I couldn’t imagine how placing some hot stones on your back could be described as a massage… But how wrong I was!

Tracey-Anne was my therapist, a really lovely Level 3 trainee therapist. She began my treatment with a body brush to help prepare and exfoliate my skin. She put a large “placement stone” on my stomach. The warmth emanated through the towels, and felt a bit like a hot water bottle – very comforting. Then the real massage began!

She applied massage oil to my legs to begin with then massaged them the heat from one of the hot basalt stones. She explained that when the stones first come out of the heating pot they are too hot to apply straight on to my skin. However as the skin on hands is tougher it can handle more heat, therefore she pressed her hands onto the stones to steal some of the heat first and massaged without the stones to begin with. I could feel the warmth from the stones moving as she massaged, which was a really relaxing. She rolled the stones over my legs, arms, back and stomach to massage each area. The stones themselves vary in size for use on different parts of the body. They are really smooth and glide across your skin with the aid of the massage oil.

Tracey-Anne also used freezing cold marble stones; this was a bit of a shock at first, but perfect for a hot day! One of my favourite parts of the treatment was when she used both the hot and cold stones together. It was a strange sensation to begin with as the intense warmth was quickly followed by extreme cold. This is supposed to be incredibly good for releasing muscle tension and increasing circulation in the limbs.

While this form of massage was not as deep as a regular full body massage for example, it was the ultimate in relaxation, I had to stop myself from falling asleep! When Tracey-Anne massaged my feet with the hot stones it felt a bit like that comforting feeling of walking over warm sand on a beach.

Tracey-Anne told me this was one of her favourite treatments to perform as she liked working with the stones, which allow her to apply more pressure in some areas as they stones do a lot of the hard work for you! She told me that Stone Therapy Massage can balance your energy levels and have a detoxing affect on some the body systems and it certainly had a relaxing effect on both my body and mind.

I would definitely recommend this treatment for relaxation. Even if you are used to having lots of full body massages, I would certainly suggest you try a Hot Stone Massage at LCBT this month. The sensation of the hot stones is so different to anything else I have ever felt; you definitely have to try it for yourself!
