Dermal fillers are a non-surgical cosmetic treatment injected into the skin to give a more youthful appearance by smoothing out lines and wrinkles and plumping the skin to make it firmer.

The natural effects of ageing and other issues like sun damage and smoking cause the skin to lose its natural plumpness, volume and moisture resulting in lines and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, nose and mouth.  Dermal fillers can be used to smooth out these lines.

They can also be used in the lips to give a fuller and more voluptuous appearance, and to give the lips better definition and reduce lipstick bleeding.

There are many different types of dermal fillers available and the kind of filler used will be gauged by the area to be treated and the type of adjustment needed.

The dermal filler selected is injected into the line or wrinkle, where it stays in the skin and binds water to plump the area and make it appear firmer.

To make the treatment as comfortable as possible a local anaesthetic cream is used.  For treatments to extra sensitive areas such as the mouth or lips, the area will be numbed with an injection.

There may be some redness, swelling or bruising after treatment has been undertaken but this should only last for a couple of days or so.

A dermal filler treatment normally takes about 30 minutes but this will obviously depend on the amount of injections and the size of the area to be treated.

The effects of a dermal filler treatment normally last about 6-12 months, again depending on the area treated and the type of filler that is used.

Thicker fillers are normally used to treat deep furrows or wrinkles and thinner fillers for more surface lines.  Thicker fillers are more likely to last longer than those used for superficial lines.

Dermal fillers are progressively broken down and absorbed by the body over time, so lines, wrinkles or lips will eventually return to their previous appearance and therefore the treatments will need to be repeated to sustain the effect.

Dermal filler treatments have low incidence of serious or lasting side effects and normal daily activities can usually be resumed straight away.  However, there may be a risk of allergic reaction this could be in the form of itching, redness or swelling.

A qualified practitioner should always be consulted with before treatment and it should be avoided if you are pregnant or breast feeding or if you have certain medical conditions or taking certain medications.
