Aromatherapy is a type of alternative medicine which uses essential oils or similar aromatic compounds extracted from plant materials such as shrubs, flowers, bark, peel, resin, grasses, fruits, roots, trees, petals, stems or seeds, to be massaged into the skin, dropped into water to be bathed in, or blended with other oils or steam to be inhaled for the purpose of improving a person’s mood, health and sense of well-being.

Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years dating back to ancient Egypt, where plants and flowers were distilled to extract their essential oils.

More recently a French chemist and perfumer, Rene Gattefosse, badly burned his hand whilst working in his laboratory.  After sinking his burnt hand into lavender oil to try to soothe the burn he discovered that the burn healed faster than normal, with no blistering or scarring, thus invoking him to research further the healing capabilities of other plant extracts.

Essential oils were also used in France during the World War II to treat wounded soldiers and a French biochemist, Marguerite Maury, further developed the idea, using essential oils as to give a healing massage.

How does Aromatherapy work?

The human nose can identify up approx. 10,000 different scents from the downright disgusting to the head swimmingly beautiful.  Essential oils from plants, flowers, roots, leaves or bark can be made up from up to 100 different chemical components which can combine to have a powerful cause on a person.  The scents can effect the alpha/beta waves in the brain which can induce different feelings and emotions such as calmness, relaxation, alertness, etc.

What are the benefits of Aromatherapy?

Clients report that the process of having a gentle massage with aromatherapy oils is a wonderfully relaxing and soothing experience. Depending on an individual’s needs, essential oils can be used to soothe, uplift, energise, relax or stimulate.

Aromatherapy can be used in the treatment of various physical and emotional problems such as stress, anxiety, depression, fatigue, pain, insomnia, coughs and colds, burns, scar tissue, digestive problems and skin disorders.

Are there any side effects and when should it be avoided?

Some essential oils are not suitable to be used during pregnancy or breast feeding, or if you have epilepsy, high blood pressure, hypoglycaemia, kidney problems, had recent surgery or sufferers of deep vein thrombosis.  Some oils can effect the way your skin reacts to uv light and can cause you to burn more easily in the sun.
