While tattoos were once considered permanent, it is now possible to remove them with treatments, fully or partially. The expense and pain of removing tattoos will typically be greater than the expense and pain of applying them. Laser tattoo removal treatments are widely available in Cheshire.
Laser tattoo removal procedure
Laser tattoo removal is performed using laser beams that react with the ink in the tattoo, and break it down. The broken-down ink is then absorbed by the body, mimicking the natural fading that time or sun exposure would create. All Tattoo pigments have specific light absorption spectra. A tattoo laser must be capable of emitting adequate energy within the given absorption spectrum of the pigment in order to provide an effective treatment. A special variety of laser beam is used on the unwanted tattoo, with an intense light being focused over the tattoo area. This light breaks up the ink particles which form the tattoo and reduces them to tiny fragments which are naturally absorbed by the body. The procedure does not give instant results, but tattoos fade with each successive treatment, gradually becoming lighter and lighter until they are no longer visible or can be covered up. Usually around 8 to 10 treatments are required.
What results can I expect from Laser tattoo removal treatment?
Those with skin irritation problems or other dermatological issues around the area of the unwanted tattoos should consult both their doctor and their surgeon before undergoing this procedure, apart from this anyone who has a tattoo they wish they didn’t should be able to benefit from this treatment. The treatment is uncomfortable, sometimes painful but a local anesthetic cream can be applied for those who might be of a weaker disposition. Also some colours, such as deep red, and larger tattoos, will not respond as well to this treatment. An initial consultation would assess whether your tattoos were suitable for undergoing this particular non-surgical procedure.
Are there any risks or side effects?
If you have a really vibrant tattoo then you really should be prepared for the fact that your tattoo will likely only be faded and thus will need covering up with some more ink. However, for those of you with smaller tattoos, especially ones in black, blue or greyscale, then laser treatment offers the only viable solution to getting rid of past artistic mistakes. The process maybe a long one; 8 or 10 sessions over a series of weeks, or maybe even months. Thus it is not a quick fix but, as long as you don’t expect the skin to be in as clear as it was prior to the tattoo, then you should be happy with this procedure.
While generally accepted as a safe treatment and the gold standard method to remove a tattoo, complications of laser tattoo removal include the possibility of discoloration of the skin such as hypopigmentation (white spots, more common in darker skin) and hyperpigmentation (dark spots) as well as textural changes. Very rarely, burns may result in scarring. Rarely, “paradoxical darkening” of a tattoo may occur, when a treated tattoo becomes darker instead of lighter. This seems to occur more often with flesh tones, pink, and cosmetic make-up tattoos.
