Vein Removal

by admin on March 16, 2010

Thread veins or spider veins are very common and are actually just enlarged or overgrown blood vessels which normally affect the face, body or legs giving a red appearance.  Thread veins may be inherited or may be caused by smoking or alcohol, temperature changes, hormonal changes, or by standing for long periods.

Laser treatments can be used to remove thread veins on the face, body and legs and will remove fine and large thread veins quickly and effectively over the course of a few treatments.

The laser delivers a burst of light energy to the affected area through the use of a special hand piece.  This energy causes the blood vessel to clog and subsequently the clogged vessel is gradually absorbed by the body removing the vein.

The feeling of laser vein removal has been described as having a small rubber band pinged against the skin.  Some people will be more sensitive to the pain and if necessary an anesthetic cream can be applied to numb the area and make the treatment more comfortable.

Treatment can last from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the size and location of the area being treated.  The amount of sessions needed to remove the veins will depend on several factors including size, location and colour of the veins to be treated.  Veins in the legs may require more sessions than facial veins.

Laser treatment for thread veins is safe and non-intrusive, however following treatment the area may be tender and there may be some redness, swelling or bruising which will normally fade within a week.

After treatment over exposure to sun should be avoided and sunscreen should always be used whenever outside to reduce to risk of the return of thread veins.
